We know diabetes comes with a long list of health considerations. So it’s natural to wonder: “Are anti-wrinkle injections safe for me?”

At Pure Aesthetics Clinic, we’ve treated many diabetic clients—including Type 1 insulin-dependent patients—with great outcomes.

But it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer. In this post, we explore the facts, what the research says, and how we adapt treatments to support your safety and healing.

💉 How Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work (in brief)

Anti-wrinkle injections use a purified neurotoxin (Botulinum Toxin A) to temporarily relax specific muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles. It’s a localised treatment and doesn’t enter the bloodstream in significant amounts.

That said, your body’s healing response matters, especially when you live with a chronic condition like diabetes.

🔬 What the Evidence Says

✅ According to a clinical review published in Dermatologic Therapy (2020), there is no direct contraindication between anti-wrinkle injections and diabetes. 🔗 Source – PubMed

✅ Botulinum toxin has even been explored for therapeutic use in diabetic neuropathy and muscle disorders, suggesting strong overall safety when administered correctly. 🔗 Source – Frontiers in Neurology.

BUT: There are some important nuances.

⚠️ Risks to Consider If You’re Diabetic

  1. Slower Healing – especially with poor glucose control

  2. Increased Bruising Risk – due to vessel fragility or medications like aspirin

  3. Infection Risk – if hygiene protocols aren’t followed

  4. Nerve Sensitivity – some patients may experience heightened discomfort

That’s why we always ask about your HBA1C and blood sugar stability before treatment. In fact, many of our patients email us their blood results ahead of time—like Tia, who confirmed her Type 1 diabetes was stable at HBA1C 52 before we proceeded with a safe cryotherapy treatment.

✅ Good Candidates for Anti-Wrinkle If Diabetic

  • You have stable, well-controlled diabetes (Type 1 or 2)

  • You’re not currently fighting an infection or experiencing poor wound healing

  • You’re not on blood-thinning medications without medical approval

  • You have realistic expectations and are able to monitor healing closely

🙅 Not Recommended If...

  • Your HBA1C is significantly elevated (>75)

  • You’ve recently had a diabetic crisis, hospitalisation, or hypoglycaemic episode

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding (regardless of diabetic status)

  • You have active skin infections or recent facial trauma

💡 Tips for a Safe Experience

  • Bring your latest blood test or diabetic clinic letter

  • Make sure your blood sugar is stable on the day of your appointment

  • Let your injector know if you’ve had delayed healing in the past

  • Don’t inject into inflamed or infected skin areas (ever!)

  • Plan for gentle aftercare—you want your skin to feel soothed, not stressed

📍 Final Thoughts

Being diabetic doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy smoother skin and confidence-enhancing results. It just means you need an injector who knows how to work with your body — not against it.

At Pure Aesthetics Clinic, we welcome diabetic clients with open arms and clinical caution. We’ve treated many—including insulin-dependent women in their 40s and 50s — with gorgeous results and zero complications.

Let’s plan your treatment the safe, supported way.
